I Feel The Heat
“You know that you are in Texas when: Your biggest bicycle wreck fear is: ‘What if I get knocked out and end up lying on the pavement and cook to death?’
I don’t know about you guys, but this heat wave that the summer solstice brought us yesterday is kicking my butt. All I read about and heard about was how miserable being in NYC was yesterday, and while I know I am hot here in SouthEast Texas, I know just how unbearable the heat in NYC can be.
See the thing is, you can’t escape the heat in Manhattan. Your entire apartment depends on a small window unit because there is no central AC. And you can’t exactly hop into your air conditioned car to run your errands, so every to-do list item is checked off by walking in the concrete jungle and carrying all your goods. And don’t even get me started on the incredible smells that seem to only come out on the hottest of days. It is enough to make you want to hibernate in an cold subway car all summer.
I am far away from the big city at the moment, but the humidity here has forced me to lay down after each of my workouts and my 5 or 6 mile runs feel as if they have sucked the life out of me. But I did come home the other day to a random gift from my mom. Frogg Toggs make a Chilly Pad Towel that is sold at Bed Bath and Beyond and most sports stores. While I am not getting paid to endorse anything, I have to hand it to this product. All you have to do is wet it, wring it out and it stays cold for up to an hour or more. I have NO idea how it works, but when the hot weather comes around, we tend to finish our workouts, skip the cool down so that we can immediately hop in the shower. This towel is great to have at the end of your workout while you are walking or stretching. It’s duel purpose of drying you off and cooling your skin is remarkable. Have any of you guys out there given it a try?
Real quick, thank you to everyone who has already taken the time out to donate to my marathon run with the Alzheimer Association. Along with being entered for a raffle for a signed Annie playbill and backstage tour, you can request a mile and I will run that particular mile in someone’s honor. With just a day of having the donation site up and running, I am overwhelmed at the outpouring of support. Each training run has a purpose and each footstep is for something so much greater than I could ever imagine. Thank you all.
On that note, I am heading off to Houston to spend some much needed time with my sister. Not sure what is on the agenda, but then again, it doesn’t really matter because I’ll be with her. Enjoy your Thursday and stay cool!

I am totally going to try that towel! My biggest frustration with exercising during the summer months is that it takes so long for me to cool down, and often I have to get in the shower/get ready/dry my hair before I have cooled down all the way, so I end up a sweaty mess all over again.
However, I am very thankful for a home and office with central AC and plenty of cool water to sip throughout the day.
So excited to see how much has been donated to your run already. I will be sharing the link periodically on FB up until the marathon. Hoping to help you go way beyond your goal!
I want the last mile…..my mom taught us to stick it out to the very end, and her in spirit and me will be there til the end!
